It is easier to contract COVID-19 in Churches than in “Trotro” – Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has said ‘trotros’ and other commercial vehicles can load at full capacity while churches operate at minimal capacities since the former is risker than the latter.

Clarifying government’s directive for commercial vehicles to operate at full capacity while churches operate minimally, the minister said the probability of contracting COVID-19 is higher in churches than in commercial vehicles.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, an Accra-based English-speaking radio station, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said the new directive was informed by experts’ advice.

“The advice that has come from the health persons is that, the kind of risk levels because of the shouting and the very exuberant activities [in churces] is higher than it is in the transport systems if indeed everybody is just wearing a mask and staying put and is observing all of the other protocols. There’s a difference between the two.”

Per the announcement by President Akufo-Addo last night, churches can now operate without a cap on the number of attendees with a period of 2 hours per service but strict adherence to social distancing must be enforced.

Meanwhile, public transport can also operate at full capacity without any social distancing regardless of the journey or the state of the vehicle.

The irony is how someone going to church will board a commercial vehicle without social distancing and go to church to go observe what he or she was not observing in the car.
