The former Member of Parliament for Nadowli Kaleo and a member of the National Democratic Congress, Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin has been chosen as the Speaker of the eighth Parliament.
Mr. Bagbin, who was the Second Deputy Speaker in the past Parliament won the decision with 138 votes casted by the members of Parliament whiles his His competitor, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye obtained 136 votes.
The aggressive and eagerNational Democratic Congress (NDC) members proposed Alban Bagbin as their decision possibility for the Speaker of Parliament while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) proposed Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye who filled in as Speaker for the seventh Parliament; 2017 to 2021.
However, General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Asiedu Nketia has said that Ghana needs a healthy Speaker of Parliament who can do the work.
According to him, the country with the level it has got to with its democracy cannot have a Speaker of Parliament who moves with an ambulance.
Speaking to Joy News ahead of the swearing-in of the 8th Parliament, Asiedu Nketia said Alban Bagbin has requisite knowledge and experience as a Parliamentarian for over decades now and he believes and know that he will do a great and magnificent job in Parliament.
He said, “We don’t need a speaker who you’ve to carry into his car and out of his car. Let’s be serious. We don’t need a speaker who always needs an ambulance”.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah made this controversial statement whiles his deputy, Otikunu was standing beside him whiles granting the interview on Joy News.
Asiedu Nketiah is known for his controversial and bold demeanor who has been one of the greatest individual rival to the New Patriotic Party since the early 90s after getting the General secretary of the Democratic Party.
