President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has indicated that the University for Development Studies would be named after Rawlings.
While delivering his tribute at the state funeral for late former president Jerry John Rawlings, Akufo-Addo noted that the former head of state deserved to be honoured.
In line with this, Akufo-Addo indicated that plans are underway to rename the University of Development Studies to the Jerry John Rawlings University for Development Studies, Tamale.
According to Akufo-Addo, this move was in the right direction because of the efforts made by late Jerry Rawlings in championing the cause of higher education in the country.
While delivering his tribute, President Akufo-Addo eulogised the late former president for his diverse roles in the promotion of governance, democracy and being the first child of Ghana’s fourth republic.
President Akufo-Addo added that Rawlings’s legacies as both a military and democratic leader is going to be forever etched in the history books of the nation.
