It is said and believed that, the global pandemic with hit us in the early months of last year 2020 have brought unprecedented challenges to the country and it has affect the economy of the county drastically that, there is the need to provide requisite resources to address these challenges and fund some major projects of the government.
The 2021 budget statement and economic policy of government in Parliament have been presented yesterday March 12, 2021 by the interim finance minister, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and a lot have been introduced.
Among others, the budget focused on measures the government is going to implement to mitigate the effect of COVID-19 global pandemic on the county’s economy.
New taxes have been introduced, some been introduced newly while other already exist but have been increased in percentage. this is to help provide requisite resources to address these challenges and fund some major projects of the government as said earlier.
Political activist, Kwame A Plus the evening after the budget was presented listed all the new tax introduced and the ones that are already exciting but it percentage have been introduced.
Those Newly introduced taxes include;
A. Covid-19 Health Levy
B. Road Toll increases
C. Gaming Tax
D. Sanitation and pollution Levy(Bola Tax)
F. 1% Increase in NHIL
G. 1% increase in Vat flat rate
H. ESLA increase-Additional burden on motorists and food prices.
I. Financial sector clean up Levy 5%
Ghanians upon sighting the newly introduced taxes are completely amazed as they react to it massively.
Though the newly introduced taxes is to help provide requisite resources to address these challenges and fund some major projects of the government, many are of the view that, the government could do better on the grounds that, they promised to move Ghana from taxation to production.
Having said that, some were in support with the new taxes introduce but have problem with the aspect of Ghanaians paying tax for Banking sector cleaning.
